Terrific project for helping children to focus on detail and their
own ability to create imaginative designs while learning about other cultures,
lifestyles and artistic traditions.

product(s): Jazz liquid tempera in bright/fluorescent colors |
materials:
- Jazz paint in assorted fluorescent colors and black
- sheets of brown kraft paper or kraft paper bags (cut down side & across
bottom to use interior area)
- pencil or chalk
- assorted paint brushes
- paint trays
- water
- newspaper

procedure:
- cover work area with newspaper
- prepare paper:
1. cut out a rectangle with rounded corners
2. crumple the paper thoroughly with hands several times until it has a
leathery consistency
3. iron out paper (with adult supervision or help!)
- draw desired design onto paper
- paint over designs outline with black paint
- paint in the design with bright colors, leaving the background as the
brown paper, and let dry

handy hints:
After drying, it may be necessary to go back over the black outlines with
either paint or a black marker. Children should be encouraged to explore
their own imaginations to create original animals, birds, plants, or a combination
of them before drawing their pictures. Characters from myths, fables or
stories may be inspirational figures. |
